DBIT's Colosseum 2014 gets 'fim city' theme - Don Bosco Institute of Technology (DBIT), Kurla | stupidsid.com

Theme: Colosseum Film City

Don Bosco Institute of Technology, Kurla gave a unique twist to its annual technical festival this year. The theme set for 2014 was ‘film city’. It styled its events around movie plots and the college was given the get-up of a film city. The justification for this was that technology is conventionally seen as boring, nerdy and only in books. However it exists beyond books and exists in the most entertaining fields today. Movies cannot function without technology and it’s in our favour to embrace that fact.

Technical Immigrants (Cause):

Colosseum went a step ahead and thought of giving back to the society with the technology it knows of. Students invited Senior citizens from the local senior citizens clubs and taught them how to use mobile phones with ease. Along with that, they were also introduced to the world of internet. They were deeply touched by this gesture and also took festival t-shirts as souvenirs of the occasion. The event stays the most important part of the festival for the students.

Events at Colosseum 2014:

1) Mega event (Treasure hunt):
Round 1: A treasure hunt across the entire campus comprising clues and tasks to be performed at various checkpoints.

The event revolves around the famous concept of inception based on the movie by the same name. A man has to be woken up from his dream to save his life, but for that the teams will have each member doing a task of debugging a circuit on a breadboard, soldering on a pcb and completing circuits at the same time.

6) Death Race:
The robot car will face many obstacles on a race track and the team that completes the track in the least amount of time wins.

7) Junkyard Wars:
Teams were taken to a Junkyard filled with components that are necessary to make a robot along with random tools. The teams with most innovative designs played the finals against each other with warring robots.

8) LAN Gaming:
Students compete in the most famous Lan games like counter strike, Fifa and Need For Speed.

9) Pirates of Silicon Valley (Hacking):
The starting rounds would have various error statements for the teams to solve. The final rounds would have the teams hacking computers and making the other teams debug them.

10) Breaking Codes:
The teams will have to code to resolve problem statements. The best coders will face-off to win.

11) Oceans 2:
Oceans 2 is an event of 2 members where students have carry out a burglary and figure out a way out of a laser field and crack open a locker safe for which they need to find the code through puzzles.

12) Popsicle Truss:
The contestants will have to design a suspension bridge to join a gap between two mountains using only Popsicle sticks.

13) Prison Break (Integrate):
Based on a prison break plan, students will get dissembled machines and will be asked to make them again. First task would need them to assemble torches to get out of the cell. Next they would have to assemble guns to tackle the guards, and last they would have to assemble tires to escape in their vehicle.

14) Laser Wars:
Everyone’s favorite indulgence for removing frustration or adrenaline. Laser tag was conducted with a unique setting. A dark, large auditorium with various bunkers and obstacles was created. UV lights helped the laser beams to get noticed in the dark.

15) The Mechanic:
The true mechanical skills of the participants were tested when they were competing on finishing fitting, turning and welding jobs with perfection and the least time.

Verdict:

The Festival was a huge success and the point that technology can be entertaining was put across very well to each and every one who was a part of the festival. It saw a huge turn-out and would also help get back the long lost charm in engineering.
